Milky Way Kinematics: Measurements at the Subcentral Point of the Fourth Quadrant

چکیده
We use atomic hydrogen (H i) data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey to study the kinematics of the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way. By measuring the terminal velocity as a function of longitude throughout the fourth Galactic quadrant we have derived the most densely sampled rotation curve available for the Milky Way between 3 ≤ R ≤ 8 kpc. We determine a new joint rotation curve fit for the first and fourth quadrants, which can be used for kinematic distances interior to the Solar circle. From our data we place new limits on the peak to peak variation of streaming motions in the fourth quadrant to be ∼ 10 km s. We show that the shape of the average H i profile beyond the terminal velocity is consistent with gas of three velocity dispersions, a cold component with ∆v = 6.3 km s, a warmer component with ∆v = 12.3 km s and a fast component with ∆v = 25.9 km s. Examining the widths with Galactic radius we find that the narrowest two components show little variation with radius and their small scale fluctuations track each other very well, suggesting that they share the same cloud-to-cloud motions. The width of the widest component is constant until R < 4 kpc, where it increases sharply. A Distant Extended Spiral Arm in the Fourth Quadrant of the Milky Way
Using data from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey we present a possible distant spiral arm in the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way. The very distinct and cohesive feature can be traced for over 70 as the most extreme positive velocity feature in the longitude-velocity diagram. The feature is at a Galactic radius between 18 and 24 kpc and appears to be the last major structure before the end of...

The rotation curve for the IV galactic quadrant, within the solar circle, is derived from the Columbia University U. de Chile CO(J=1→0) survey of molecular gas. A new sampling, four times denser in longitude than in our previous analysis, is used to compute kinematical parameters that require derivatives w/r to galactocentric radius; the angular velocity Ω(R), the epicyclic frequency κ(R), and ...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Polarimetry of the Inner Galaxy
We present our results from the Southern Galactic Plane Survey, an effort to map the fourth quadrant of the Milky Way in linear polarization at a frequency of 1.4 GHz and at a resolution of 1–2 arcmin. These data are a powerful probe of both the turbulence and large-scale structure of magneto-ionic gas, and have revealed a variety of new features in the interstellar medium.
متن کاملDoes the Milky Way have a Maximal Disk?
The Milky Way is often considered to be the best example of a spiral for which the dark matter not only dominates the outer kinematics, but also plays a major dynamical role in the inner galaxy: the Galactic disk is therefore said to be “sub-maximal.” This conclusion is important to the understanding of the evolution of galaxies and the viability of particular dark matter models. The Galactic e...

Major advances in our understanding of the Universe have historically come from dramatic improvements in our ability to accurately measure astronomical quantities. The astrometric observations obtained by modern digital sky surveys are enabling unprecedentedly massive and robust studies of the kinematics of the Milky Way. For example, the astrometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS...
